Introduction

Hybrids have become more popular in the hobby recently, as more and more breeders experiment

with crossing different species to hopefully Produce the ultimate snake.

Hybridizing or Crossing different species can result in a fantastic array

of weird and wonderful colour and pattern combinations,

with most hatchlings from the same clutch showing a diverse range of these combinations.

Not to long ago it was thought that hybrids would be sterile,

but without doubt this has been proved not to be the case,

as a matter of fact the majority of hybrids that are produced show What we call  " Hybrid vigor "

which can be expressed with faster and larger growth, Larger clutch's of eggs,

better breeding responses and a better response to feeding.

********************

(cases of infertile hybrids are reported just as they are in the populations of wild and captive bred non hybrid snakes)

* A note on infertile eggs *

Anyone that wishes to create hybrids from scratch should take into account that most of the initial starter crosses

produce a high percentage of infertile eggs, and a lot of the time you will need many pairs of snakes to help

counteract the amount of bad (infertile eggs) that can be produced from single pairings, in some cases it can take

a few years or even many years to create that starter hybrid cross, and some crosses just don't work no matter how

much you try.

********************

Hybridizing is no easy task , and takes lots of planning , a good understanding of the mating responses of the species

that are going to be crossed and accurate record keeping.

also most first generation hybrids can look or very closely resemble either one of its parents,

it is not usually until the 2nd or 3rd generation that the real differences are seen.

Uk-Hybrids will always disclose the genetic makeup of our hybrids

and urge's everyone that keeps breeds and sells hybrids to be just as honest.

Hybrids are beautiful and very unique snakes ,

lets keep them for the collector of the unusual and those that can be honest and appreciate them for what they are.

From Pure to hybrid

(Example)

( Starting with two pure type Milksnakes )

Albino Nelsons milk     x     Normal Pueblan milk

The offspring prediction from this pairing would be

(F1)

50/50 Nelsons/Pueblan Hybrids

100% Normal (het Amelanistic)

*****

(Now the F1 Hybrid Mating)

For this example we are using a brother and sister from the clutch

Het Nelsons/Pueblan     x     Het nelsons/Pueblan

The offspring prediction from this (hybrid) pairing would be

(F2)

50/50 Nelsons/Pueblan Hybrids

75% Normal (66% possible het. Amelanistic)

25% Amelanistic

*****

The Result would be

75%                                                                        25%

(66% poss het Amel)                                                  (100% Amelanistic)

(Please remember that the Results are only a prediction and the final percentages are based on an average)

We have occasional surprise results

IE

90% Amelanistics from het to het pairings

70% Amelanistics from an Amel to Amel  pairing

And many not so extreme results

Understanding the (F) generations

(Which is not just confined to hybrids)

F = filial , and the number that follows ie 1 = generation.

Mendal classified the subjects in his genetic studies as " P " = parental, F1 = first filial, F2 = second filial, and so forth.

In the truest sense F1 would indicate progeny produced by unrelated animals.

F2 would indicate the progeny of the F1's if bred to one another (i.e. brother X sister).

An F1 from one breeding and an F1 from another breeding would cease to have any relatedness

and so they as breeders would be identified as the "P" generation and their offspring F1.

These terms serve to indicate relatedness.

Many herpers mistakenly apply the term to indicate generations removed from the wild.

You can have snakes that are several generations removed from the wild and yet are still F1's.
